Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing in the Finger Lakes

Cross-country skiing is very popular in the Finger Lakes and snowshoeing is beginning to be more popular as well. There are many, many places where you can ski and snowshoe, most often for free. State parks, state forests, wildlife management areas, nature centers, and the Erie Canalway Trail System usually allow skiing and may even have designated trails, but they often don't provide amenities like trail grooming and rentals. However, these places are often more quiet and have fewer visitors than dedicated ski areas, allowing for a wilderness-type of experience. (You will almost certainly have to break your own trail, but this can be part of the fun.) Some golf courses also permit skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, but you shouldn't assume that they do. Always check with the golf course beforehand.
