Don't forget that most of the colleges and universities, golf courses, and wineries in the region can accommodate weddings and often have romantic spots where weddings can be held. STATE PARKSThe most frequent request is for information on how to have a wedding at a state park. Many of the parks do permit weddings, and some of the parks are very popular wedding venues, requiring planners to make their reservations well in advance. Here's how to plan a wedding at a state park in the Finger Lakes and some of the important things to think about.
♥ Take a look at the various parks in the Finger Lakes to see which parks appeal to you and are near your home base.
♥ Do you want to have your wedding indoors or outdoors? A number of the parks--Cayuga, Letchworth, and Sonnenberg to name just three--have indoor spaces where weddings can be performed. Or, would you rather have your wedding outdoors, perhaps by a waterfall or on a beach? If so, make sure that you and your party will be willing to put up with whatever weather Nature provides.
♥ Some of the most romantic sites in state parks are a bit off the beaten path. Make sure that your wedding party won't mind walking on what might be a narrow, muddy trail and that, if you're planning to wear a long gown, you won't mind getting it a bit dirty.
♥ If you're set on having your wedding in a state park, make sure that your location can accommodate the elderly, infirm, and handicapped. Even the nicest pavilions, which are likely to be at ground level, may not have bathrooms that can accommodate wheelchairs, and sitting at a picnic table for hours may not be your grandmother's idea of fun.
♥ Once you've narrowed down your choices to three or four parks, contact the park manager to discuss your event.
♥ Often brides want to hold the wedding at that romantic spot in a rural park and then take the entire group to a lovely reception in the city. Remember that moving a large number of people a long distance can consume a great deal of time and cause a lot of stress, especially for the people who aren't familiar with the area and are worried they're going to get lost. To minimize stress and save time, try your best to keep everything at one location.
♥ Finally, always visit the park before making your final decision. Remember that the park manager has to deal with all the aspects of running a park--from backed-up toilets to bears. The summer home of banker Frederick Ferris and Mary Clark Thompson, Sonnenberg is one of the most extensively preserved country estates from the late Victorian era. The property includes 50 acres of gardens, a 40-room Queen Anne-style mansion, greenhouse complex, and Japanese tea house. Sonnenberg is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Finger Lakes Wine Center is housed in the historic Bay House near the Conservatory.
