Habitat: Brick Pond is owned by the Fred L. Waterman Conservation Education Center in Apalachin, New York. Located partially in the Village of Owego, Brick Pond is a long, rather narrow body of water thought to have originally been part of the Susquehanna River, which loops nearby. The water depth is only about 4 ft./1.2 m., making it a shallow body of water that tends to fill in with vegetation in years when there isn't sufficient rain.
Season: Spring is best, but this place is teeming with birds and other wildlife at every season but winter.
Access: The parking area is directly across from 553 E. Front St., Owego, NY 13827. (Mapquest it this way.) There is a circular path around part of the pond. Wear waterproof boots as the trail can be a bit wet but not muddy. Dogs are not permitted on the property.
Notes: Biting insects can be unpleasant in the summer. For more information about and photos of the pond, click here.
