LocationGoodhue lake is located on County Route 3, locally known as Goodhue Lake Road, in the Town of Addison in Steuben County. Physical FeaturesThe lake is situated in a narrow valley through which runs Goodhue Creek. The lake is more or less a long oval of about 50 acres. The road runs along the southeastern side of the lake with cottages and the hillside along the northwestern side. Goodhue Creek flows south into the Canisteo River. HistoryGoodhue Creek is named for George Goodhue, one of the first settlers in the area. In 1793 he built a sawmill on the creek where it meets the lake. AccessThere is no public access to this lake. If you wish to use the lake, you will need to rent one of the cottages. Boating and swimming are permitted on the lake. BikingRoads in the area are narrow, winding, and hilly but very scenic. Some are dirt roads. Bikers need to be good at climbing hills and able to go long distances. HikingMiles of trails are available in McCarthy Hill State Forest. WildlifeThe valley in which Goodhue Creek runs is loaded with wildlife. Ospreys frequent this area as do other water birds like herons, kingfishers, and wood ducks. There are wetlands all along this creek that can be viewed from the road. You may see muskrats, beavers, raccoons, deer, and black bears. Watch and listen for forest birds like turkeys, thrushes, warblers, blue jays, etc. PhotographyThe area is scenic any time of the year but particularly so in autumn. The woods at Pinnacle State Park has many native wildflowers.
