GENERAL INFORMATIONBirdseye Hollow Park is a county-maintained park located in Birdseye Hollow State Forest. The forest is comprised of 3,446 acres in four towns in northeastern Steuben County. The park is located in the Town of Bradford near the Schuyler County line. The park is open from dawn to dusk every day. There is no admission fee. AMENITIESThe park lies in a valley called Birdseye Hollow. The main feature of the park is Birdseye Hollow Pond, which was created by damming a small, unnamed creek that acts as a tributary to the larger Mud Creek. The resulting pond is 70 acres in size.
The park also has a picnic area with a pavilion, a playground, and a portable toilet. There is no on-line map of the park, however, the photo (below) of the layout can be printed as a jpg.
BoatingBoats, except those powered by gasoline motors, are permitted on the pond. There is no dock. SwimmingSwimming is permitted at the swimmer's risk. There is a grassy spot near the shore where people can sunbathe. HikingA portion of the Finger Lakes Trail (FLT) runs through the forest and through the park. The portion that runs through the park runs through the woods on the east side of the pond. This portion is .9 mi./1.4 km. long. A second trail section was created attached to the FLT closer to the pond's shore with short spurs allowing you to view the pond. This section is also .9 mi./1.4 km. long. The two sections create a pleasant loop on the east side of the pond 1.8 mi./2.8 km. long. BikingBiking is not permitted on the FLT or on the trail along the shore, however, biking on the roads around the forest is permitted. Some of these roads are not paved. A main road nearby--State Route 226--is an excellent and scenic biking route. At its southern end it beginning in the Village of Savona and runs northeast through Steuben County and all the way through Schuyler County to the Yates County line. Wildlife WatchingEarly morning is the best time to watch wildlife. Birds especially will be in evidence in the woods and in the shrubby vegetation around the pond. Watch for herons and other birds on the pond. Eagles and ospreys are known to frequent the area. CampingCamping is not permitted in the park proper, but camping is permitted in Birdseye Hollow Forest in accordance with state regulations. There are also camp sites at nearby Sanford Lake.
