U-Pick Farms in the Finger Lakes

It's wonderful to be able to pick your own fruits and vegetables. And the Finger Lakes is a great place to do it, starting with strawberries in June and ending with pumpkins in October. A word of warning: The weather here, especially frost and rain, can damage crops to such an extent that farms that usually have crops for picking may not. These crop losses can vary from county to county. You would be wise to always call before you go. If a farm in one county doesn't have what you want, contact a farm in another county. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Remember too, that crops in counties along Lake Ontario can ripen a week or two before they ripen in counties further south. This can allow you to extend your season if you're willing to drive around a little.

Things to ask when you call:

1. Should I bring my own containers or do you provide containers?

2. How do you charge--by the pound, by the quart, by the bushel, by the crate?

3. Do you accept checks or credit cards?

4. Are children permitted in the fields/orchards?

5. If I'm picking from a tree, do you provide ladders?

6. Do you spray your fruits and vegetables and, if so, with what?

7. When is the best time of day to come?

8. Do you have bathroom facilities?
