Campgrounds in Chemung County

Camping can create some unforgetable experiences, and camping in the Finger Lakes is no exception. Whether you're pitching a tent in a state forest (which is free and requires no permit for the first three days) or renting a lodge with all the amenities in one of the Finger Lakes' beautiful state parks, you'll enjoy being outdoors in the Finger Lakes. You can connect with the Finger Lakes Trail for some great hiking, bike or boat along the Erie Canal, or just sit by a campfire on a warm summer's night.

Please keep in mind that the Finger Lakes has many wild animals that frequent parks and many be attracted to campgrounds, including black bears, raccoons, and skunks. Keep your possessions out of harm's way, don't leave food lying around, and make sure your pets are leashed.

You will be expected to leave your site clean and any fires totally extinguished.

Finally, be aware that campgrounds on the lakes--no matter which lake--are extremely popular and in high demand. You should make reservations for a site to avoid being disappointed.

In August of 1779, the peace and tranquility of this forested hill was broken by the boom of cannons, the crack of musket fire, and the yells of Iroquois warriors. The Continental ArmGranite monument at Newtown Battlefield State Park in the Finger Lakes, New York, USA.y was engaged in battle with the British regulars, Loyalist rangers and 1000 Iroquois Indian warriors. The battle of Newtown was the decisive clash in one of the largest offensive campaigns of the American Revolution. This expedition, known as the Sullivan-Clinton Campaign, had been regarded as punishment to several tribes among the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy who had sided with the British in the war and had attacked frontier settlements.

A stone monument was dedicated at the top of the hill on August 29, 1879, the centennial of the Battle of Newtown. The present granite monument was erected in 1912. During the 1930s, Civilian Conservation Corps crews built and developed many of the present facilities of the park, including a beautiful, rustic lodge. In 1973, Newtown Battlefield Reservation was designated as a historic landmark and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
