The Riverfront Levee and the River's Edge trails along the Chemung River in Elmira

The Riverfront Levee and the River's Edge trails are designed to create a loop along the north bank of the Chemung River. The loop is easy hiking and biking.

This is a hiking/biking trip of about 5 miles. Use Google's satellite map as a guide.

Begin by parking in the lot on Grandview Avenue for Pirozzolo Park and the West Elmira Town Hall. (There is a small sign (that you might miss) pointing your way at the intersection of West Water Street and Grandview Avenue. Remember that West Water Street (State Route 352) is one-way only in an easterly direction. Once you have parked, you will notice there there is a portable toilet near one of the baseball diamonds.

Cross over in between the baseball diamonds to the eastern property boundary of the park. You will see the raised levee and the beginnings of the Riverfront Levee Trail. Again, this is marked on the The Riverfront Levee Trail looking west with the beginnings of the River's Edge Trail near the trees on the left.Google satellite maps.

This trail goes for 2.5 miles to the Walnut Street Bridge over the Chemung River. You can continue off trail through the city to explore if you like.

On the return trip, begin by using the Levee Trail. You will pass by an oval body of water on your left at river level. This is Foster's Pond. After the pond is a large treeless area that is mowed followed by a small woods. The River's Edge Trail is not marked but begins with a narrow bike trail through the trees to near the river's edge. The trail continues through various forms of woodland vegetation until it connects with Ohio Avenue, about 2 miles in distance.

The River's Edge Trail along the Chemung River in the City of Elmira.Take Ohio Avenue a short distance to West Water Street. You are now west of Grandview. Go right on West Water Street about 1 mile. Turn right onto Grandview. You should be back at the park.

Along the River's Edge Trail are a number of places to stop and swim and have lunch. Watch for eagles fishing in the river.
