Home > Recreation > GolfGolf Courses in the Finger LakesThe Finger Lakes offers nearly 175 golf courses, both public and private, with courses ranging from easy to challenging in both the traditional tree-lined fairway and the Scottish links styles. For course ratings see the New York State Golf Association.
Because of the topography created by the glaciers thousands of years ago, many golf courses have rolling fairways and kettle ponds that allow the golfer to experience these hard-to-find unique natural challenges. In addition, many courses take advantage of beautiful views of the lakes, adding to the golfer's overall experience. Enjoy.
The Legacy of Robert Trent JonesRobert Trent Jones played a significant role in the design of New York State's golf courses. Of the 28 courses Jones either designed completely or in part throughout the state, 12 are in the Finger Lakes. Jones was a student at Cornell University from 1928 to 1930. Since there was no curriculum specifically in golf, he was allowed to be an indepentent study student in the College of Agriculture. There he studied surveying, hydraulics, landscape architecture, horticulture, and agronomy, as well as journalism, public speaking, and art. In 1941 he designed a 9-hole course for the University (on Warren Road) and in 1954 expanded it to 18 holes. In 1983, the University inducted him into its Athletic Hall of Fame.
