Ice Skating in the Finger Lakes

Ice skating is a popular fall and winter pastime in the Finger Lakes. With more than 40 skating facilities in the region, you will find everything from outdoor park ponds to well-lighted indoor arenas. The larger facilities often rent skates and provide restrooms. Hours of operation will vary, so many sure you verify these before going.

Here are some things to consider before going.

OUTDOORS
1. Consider the wind. Windy days always seem colder. Make sure you dress in layers.
2. Consider the sun. You may need a sun screen on sunny days or on days when the sun is reflected off the snow.
3. Don't skate on thin ice.
4. Skating on rough ice can damage your skates' blades.
5. If it's just snowed, you may need to bring a shovel or broom to remove the snow.

INDOORS
1. Dress in layers so you don't get overheated.
2. Bring some change (usually quarters) so you can put your things in a locker.
3. If renting skates, make sure you choose a size that's big enough to accommodate thick socks. Tight skates can cut off circulation and make your feet feel cold.
4. If there are lots of people on the ice, skate in the direction of traffic.
5. Quit while you're still having fun, not when you're tired.

Skate the Bay

An international speed skating marathon, skaters will speed around a 1000-m groomed, natural-surface oval on Irondequoit Bay. There will be a 50-km marathon as well as a 25 km and a 10 km long-distance race.
