Main St. Naples, NY 14512 Architect: Unknown Style: Federal Period: 1750-1849 Ownership: Private Historic Significance: Associated with Ephraim Cleveland. If true, the story of Ephraim Cleveland is an interesting one. Born in 1740 in Connecticut, he became a captain. (It's unclear whether this was in the British Army or a local militia.) He was captured by Indians and held captive for three years, at which point he escaped. He later fought in the Revolutionary War. For whom is unclear but perhaps for the Colonists as he and a fellow named Mark Watkins were captured by Indians, many of whom supported the British. These Indians pulled out all Cleveland's and Watkins' hair and tied them to stakes. As the Indians were preparing to burn the men alive, a squaw whose son had been killed in the war, asked for the men in "payment" for her dead son. (This "exchange" was a common practice among the Indians and often meant enslavement for the exchangee.) Cleveland's hair never grew back, and he wore an eel-skin cap to cover his head from then on. After a time, he and Watkins gained the trust of the tribe and were allowed to go hunting alone, at which point they took the opportunity to escape. Around 1783 he made his way to Ontario County and settled in Naples Flats. He is considered one of the founding fathers of Naples and lived there until he died, sometime between 1820 and 1827.
