Note: Composed of nine buildings of brick and stone, the Elmira Female College was chartered in 1855. It was the first educational institution for women in the country with admission and degree requirements equivalent to those of the men's colleges. This change was an important milestone in the struggle for women's equality. In 1952, Mark Twain's one-room octagonal study was moved from Quarry Farm to campus, where it currently resides. This unique structure can be viewed any time. Its doors are usually open in good weather with a student guide present to answer questions.
