Home > BasicsFinding a Job in the Finger LakesILovetheFingerLakes.com, like ILoveNY, is a tourism Web site. However, so many people have found their way to this site in the hopes of finding a job that I am posting this page.
The Finger Lakes is full of talented people from marine biologists (although we have no salt water) to blacksmiths. We have well-known musicians, humanitarians who work behind the scenes to make our communities better, and Nobel and Pulitzer prize winners. If you'd like to work in the Finger Lakes, here are some hints I hope will be helpful.
1. If you are not a United States resident, you must have a "Green Card" or some similar residency status to work legally in the United States.
2. If you already live in the Finger Lakes and want to work in a local business like a grocery store, a restaurant, or a nursing home, check local newspapers for available jobs or look in the telephone book for these types of businesses and give them a call.
3. Some jobs are also listed on the New York State Department of Labor's Web site. This is a statewide listing that can help you find jobs both in the Finger Lakes and in other regions of New York State.
4. Stop in at any of the county Employment Services offices listed below. These are satellite offices of the Department of Labor. They have materials that can help you find out the types of businesses that operate in that county, what types of jobs those businesses might have available, and how to contact those businesses. Keep in mind that most, if not all, of the large companies, hospitals, universities, etc. in the Finger Lakes have Web sites where they post jobs and that, in many cases, they only accept applications for those jobs via e-mail.
Finally, remember that many people find employment through internships and through personal contacts. Unlike in some socialist countries where companies are obligated to hire people, companies in the United States are not so obligated. New York State is a hire and fire at will state. What that means is that employers in New York State can hire who they want when they want and terminate them for any or no reason.
Good Luck!
